And so we come to the conclusion of the second ‘working’ week.  The weekend is still to come, so undoubtedly there will be more done then, but this is a wrap up of the working week.

The week was not quite as productive as I would have hope – too many interruptions – though it kept at the same pace as the first week.  The count seems to have been somewhere around 13K words, give or take.  Most of that was work on ‘Winter Wolves’.

I finished the plot outline of Winter Wolves and have been hard at work on the alpha draft of it, reaching a little over 11K words on it.  The plan is to complete the draft by the end of next week, at somewhere in the vicinity of 20-25K words and then commence the beta polish.

There should, shortly, appear another project on this site.  More on that, however, in a later post.

Short Story Friday is well underway, and there is an update to be had already. The Bronze Man has been further added to.

Awn has traveled to challenge the Chelosian raiders and has come up against the Chelosian champion, Kiriastas.

The outcome? Tune in next time.

Short Story Friday is not done yet, so there may be more to come later in the day.

Short Story Friday

Short Story Friday has arrived. Huzzah!

What exactly, I hear you ask, is Short Story Friday. Simply, it is the day of the week I devote to working on short stories. Why take time away from working on longer projects? There are a number of reasons.

Short stories tend to be less complex, but more concise than longer works of fiction. As a result, they require a different style of writing, and that can only help improve me as a writer. Being stuck in a rut of the same old, same old can stagnate you, so mixing it up can shake out some of those cobwebs.

They are also, oddly, somewhat quicker to complete. Actually being able to have something complete in front of you is a boost to a struggling writer. The sense of accomplishment may not match that when you complete that one hundred thousand word epic, but it is a start and can drive you forward.

Being able to show people something completed is also a boost. It can hopefully get people interested in your works, and if you get really lucky, you may get it published, which can only help boost interest. At the least it can give people something to critique.

So that is what Short Story Friday is about. I hope to, each Friday, post up something from the day’s work. It may not always be the entire short story, it may be just a part of it, but the plan is for something to go up.

It is something of an inspiration to note that two of the best know literary characters, Sherlock Holmes (by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and Conan the Cimmerian (by Robert E. Howard) were born in short stories, and they endure still too this day. Not that I claim to be at their level of prowess, but it is a comforting thought to be able to follow in their footsteps.

So Short Story Friday, here we come.

Just hit five figures on the alpha draft of ‘Winter Wolves’ 10,000 words done and more to come. Giving my self a short break as a reward.

Alpha draft? Strange term I hear you say. Comes from too much computing. The alpha is the initial, basic concept, while the beta is when the polish and bug fixes get done, of which there tend to be many builds.

In effect that is the way I’m doing it. The ‘alpha draft’ is the initial skeleton of the story, the plot of the story without much flesh or skin. At the current rate it would appear that all up this will be in the 20-30,000 word length.

Once that is done I will start the beta plot, fleshing out the story. Adding descriptions, minor plot points, expanding and polishing. At least, that is the plan.

Methods and Planning

I have been looking back over the way I have been doing things lately, and come to the conclusion that a lot of the reason I have failed to make headway in the past is due in part to the paucity of planning (with healthy chunks of laziness thrown in for good measure.)

In the past I really didn’t plan. Generally the case was that I’d get an idea, jot it down in a notebook and that would be the extent of the planning. I’d start writing at page one and then when I ran into a dead end I had no planning to know what came next.

If I had been writing the Lord of the Rings, I’d have a notebook which on one page would have the following; ‘Frodo inherits magic ring from uncle. Needs to throw into volcano to destroy? Meets companions at elf town, set out. Boromir dies? Ring destroyed. Aragon becomes king? Walking trees??’

And that would most likely be the some total of planning. I’d start writing, get a few thousands words in and have an idea about how Frodo’s uncle received the ring, and start writing a new story called The Hobbit.

The conclusion I reached was that, for me, that wasn’t working. It was when I was reading through an article by Jen Hayley on her blog about how she was planning her book that I realised I, too, needed to start doing some planning if I was to get anywhere. The article is at Virtual Plotting Board, and I am grateful for the inspiration it gave.

So for once I have sat down and plotted out a story properly, more or less. For Winter Wolves, I have a series of plot points and sub-plot points already mapped out. There will undoubtedly be changes and additions made, but I am optimistic that with this story that I can make headway as I have a start, middle and end mapped out.

Saturday was pretty much a write off – too many other things needed doing and prevented anything more that a little reviewing of plot ideas for the tentatively titled ‘Winter Wolves’.

Still, looking back over the week it wasn’t too bad a start for the first week dedicated to writing. Around 12,700 words in five days. Probably more than that, as I only really count the total at the end of the day and that discounts anything that had been re-written during the day. Of course around 8000 of those words were for the currently shelved ‘Twilight of the Wolves’.

For the first week it was a good, learning process. Next week, hopefully, will see an improvement as I learn from lessons from this weeks work. By the end of next week I hope to the alpha plot of ‘Winter Wolves’ finished and ready to go flesh out, and also to have more of ‘The Bronze Man’ polished up ready to add to the site.

Update:  Managed to sit down Sunday afternoon for a while.  Cranked out around 1500 word, so the weekend didn’t end on a complete loss.

Fifth day of writing has concluded, working on the new project, which as the working title ‘Winter Wolves’. 2500 words have been done on the plot outline and rough draft. I’m in the process of working out further plot details, as the concept is still in the early stages.

Day Five: New Directions

After a deal of though, I have decided to postpone work on Twilight of the Wolves for now. It is still a story I want to tell, and will return to, but there are a few problems with having it for a first book.

Firstly, it starts at the end of the period, not the start. Though this is not always a problem, it makes more sense to start earlier on. Secondly, it perhaps starts a little slow, which isn’t the best way to start a first book. It needs to grab attention right from the start, and this one would best suit coming along later on.

So what is this new project? It has yet to be given a name, but it is an adventure featuring lost ruins, hidden treasures, a mysterious lady, shape-shifters, minotaurs and dragons, and of course a battle over the fate of a war.

Day Four

The total for day four was much improved, up to 3100 words completed. Of those 2400 were done on The Bronze Man short story, cleaning up the rough draft. The other 700 words were done on the rough draft of Twilight of the Wolves, which is now out to 8000 words. The draft is still in a very basic form, basically an outline of the story so far. Once the draft is finished, hopefully by next week, it will be time to return to the start and rewrite it, fleshing out the skeleton of the story.

An extract from another short story, the Bronze Man, has now been posted up. This first part has been polished up to a reasonable degree, enough to display for now. More part of the short story will be added as they reach a similar level. For now the rest is in rough draft form, waiting for an overhaul.
