It feels a bit surreal to be making this post, but I’ve had a review of Pure Escapism: Volume One.  A good one too, which almost makes it immodest to post.  To remain balanced I shall be obliged to post up a poor review as well, even if I have to write it myself.

The review comes from Mr. E. Patrick Dorris, who came across it at Smashwords.  He also writes there, with the series John Smith, World Jumper – more on which later. He is one of the highest rated authors by readers there too, which makes it a double honour. I encourage people to have a read of his story too.

His main review was on his blog, which can be read here. Part of what he says goes as follows;

As I have attempted to do with the John Smith, World Jumper series, Mr. Warwick seems to write in a fast paced, action oriented style while presenting characters that aren’t overly angsty and flawed like so many of today’s heroes.

I write what I like to read, and if others like it as well, that’s an added bonus. I guess I grew up reading a different era of heroes – sure, they had their problems, regrets, doubts and the like, by they didn’t descended into sullen, surly angst. They got out and did what needed doing without moping around the place. And because they were heroes, they often died in the process.

He also has a couple of shorter reviews of the first two stories at the webpage for Volume One.

For Cahuac and the Sun he wrote;

“Cahuac and the Sun,” the second story in the series reminded me so much of Native American myths (although clearly not set there, at least not in this universe) that I could see Mr. Warwick writing a believable mythological background for a world of his own making. It was completely original, but with themes and elements so familiar that if one slipped it into a book containing hunter-gatherer or early agriculturist myths, not many would suspect it was not authentic myth

This was exactly what I was aiming for, so it it pleasing to know it worked. A thing that wasn’t raised in the story, and really there was no need to, is that the people in question, the Aracan, aren’t even human. I am shortly planning on doing a post that will explain in a bit more detail where the story, and the Aracan came from, as they have had a fairly lengthy evolution to arrive at their current form.

Failed to make the quota yesterday sadly.  Didn’t even make 1K words.  Overall for the first five days I’ve managed 9075 words, so need to put in a good day today to catch up.

The goods news is the drafts for all four stories for the second volume fo Pure Escapism are now done, ready for editting, though in the case of The Village I think it will take some major editting.

Still, hopefully by the end of next week, it will be ready to go.

Time for another review of the last week’s writing efforts.

I’m making good progress, having hit the 2K mark for all the first three days of the month to date, and a total of 6200 words all up. All of that has been towards the second volume of Pure Escapism, and it is getting closer to being finished. Rough drafts if two of the four articles are complete and a third is very close, and will be finished today. The forth may be done today as well, but we will see. After that will need to come some extensive editting.

It feels good to be writing a decent amount again, making goals and progress. I guess it is like a drug at times – when I’m not writing I’m thinking about it and get moody and irritable, but when I make those writing goals I get on a it of a high. Now if I could only get over this habit of not writing when I sit down to write – to concentrate on it and ignore everything else.

First two days of the June Challenge have gone well – around 4100 words written.  All of that so far is working towards the second volume of Pure Escapism.

Most of the work has been on The Hall of Black Trees, which to date is around 7300 words long and the first draft not yet completed.  It appears as if it will be the main piece for the volume, as the other stories aren’t going to turn out anywhere near its length.

Should have the rough drafts finished by weeks end at this rate, ready for editing.

Well, June is upon us, and with it winter down here in the southern hemisphere.

With it I am setting myself a new challenge – 2K a Day. For the next sixty days I plan to set myself the task of writing 2K words a day. I had initially planned for 3K a day, but thought that might be a little too optimistic. I shall certainly aim for that if I can, but the 2K mark will be the minimum.

The initial phase will be to finish off the short stories for the second volume of Pure Escapism. If I can keep that up rough drafts should be done by the end of the week. After that I will start work on other things, perhaps some of the stories for the third volume, but hopefully also getting back to working on a novel.

The good news is that I hit the mark for the first day, doing just a bit under 2100 words.

Main news of the week was of course the collection of short stories I released as Pure Escapism: Volume One. I can’t say as how it has taken off like a house of fire, but it is early days and there hasn’t been much in the way of advertising its existence yet.

On the positive side I have had a couple of nice things said about it, which was very encouraging.

Work for the second volume is well underway – perhaps not as quickly as I had hoped, but certainly on schedule for a release in June.

Twenty weeks into the year already – where does time go?

News of the week is that I’ve finally finished the last of the four short stories I have been editing, at least well enough for the purposes I want it for. Hopefully sometime during the day the four of them will be available on the site, in one form or another.

Still no closer to working out the conundrum from the previous post – still requires more thinking I guess.

Once more I am having quite an old debate with myself – where to begin. It is an old, old debate. There are many stories I want to tell in my writing about my worlds, but I want to choose a good one to begin with, to garner interest in the world and to share some of the concepts behind the world, as well as introduce secrets that will gradually be revealed.

As I may have mentioned before, I am a big history buff. A lot of that is evident in my world and my writings. I want to show the passage of time, as characters and events become myths and legends over the course of history. Yet at the same time I don’t want to spoil some of the surprises in store.

Which all brings it back to – where to begin.

There are four main periods of time, so far, that I have focused on for ideas, scattered over a broad period of time. I want to explore them all, in short stories and longer stories and whatever else I can.

Logically you would start at the beginning, but in this case it really won’t work. The beginning here is the pre-human world, which I refer to as the Age of Myths. It is heavily influenced by such works as the Silmarillion, various creation myths and even the Old Testament. The Silmarillion is perhaps my favourite fantasy book of all time and I would really like to write a book in that style for this period. Problem is that you would never do that as a first book – it would never sell. It would be a book written for myself and, in the unlikely event of major success, the die hard fans. Cahuac and the Sun is an example of the style of work I am aiming for, though chronologically the story dates from after the period in question.

Following on from that we move on to what I call the Age of Heroes. It deals with bronze age human cultures, specifically early Maedari and Chelosians, and the wars between them. This draws on and is influenced by the ancient Greek works, such as the Iliad and Odyssey by Homer, Herodotus and Thucydides and by the ancient Celtic tales, such as in the Mabinogion. It is a period of chariot riding champions, as exemplified by Awn in The Bronze Man. It is certainly a less commonly explored area for fantasy, which is both a strike for and against it. Also, while I do have a few short story ideas for the period, there are as yet no ideas for a novel.

The next period, and really the one I started out with, has no name. It is a much more conventional fantasy period, straddling the late medieval/early renaissance, with the burgeoning of science and exploration, the invention of printing presses, experimentation with gunpowder. it does not, nor will it have, Knights and heavy plate armour. It doesn’t fit the climate nor cultures. This would logically be the place to start, but there is a problem. There is a story I want to tell first. It has been in my head for many many years. If I tell some of the other stories planned for that period, it will spoil some of the plot. The problem is that I really want to do this one properly, but your first book is normally not your best one. Hence the dilemma.

The fourth time period also has no name, but it a bit further on, with the advent of Napoleonic era technology into a fantasy world. Very much so different than your standard fantasy. I am very much looking forward to writing in this time frame, but the worry is that once more it may be too different from conventional fantasy for a first book. Plus there is a chance it may give away some of what is going on in the aforementioned book.

So, there you have it. My dilemma. I am going to have to have a long think and read through of notes to figure this one out.

Well, finished the editing of the third short story over the weekend. Just one more to go.

That one is the longest of them though, and the first one written, so will probably take the longest. I hope to have it done in the next couple of days though.

Making Progress

Got in a couple of hours of solid work yesterday and finished off the second of the short stories I had in progress (for a given value of finished.)

It came out to around 9500 words in the end, a decent length for a short story. I’m sure that with time I could make it better but it is good enough for what I want for now.

The other two short stories I hope to finish editing in the next few days, ready for people to have a read of.
